I have been given the opportunity to travel to Kisiizi, Southwest Uganda with UCD Volunteers Overseas Charity as an elective placement in June 2025 for 4 weeks. I will be travelling a group of my physiotherapy peers, a physiotherapy clinical tutor and clinical nutrition and dietetics students to Kisiizi Hospital. In Kisiizi Hospital, I will be volunteering as a student physio, working with local families on disability awareness and providing paediatric rehabilitation to these children. We will be assisting staff from the Kisiizi Hospital in a Community/Paediatric Rehab programme, primarily consisting of a 2-3 week intensive therapy programme for children with Cerebral Palsy (CP). We will also focus on providing education to their families to ensure they equipped to manage once they return home. As a volunteer, we are all asked to raise €1550 with the funds going directly towards staff costs, physiotherapy equipment, wheel chairs, walking aids, specialised seating, assistive devices and prosthesis for the children and development of community services that will make a difference long term for these families. Any contribution big or small will be greatly appreciated by myself, the team in Kisiizi and the families.
