My Story

Paul Quigley and Stephen Tighe will swim from Alcatraz, the former maximum security prison in San Francisco Bay to land. A feat thought impossible until recently. At a distance of over 2.5km they will have to contend with freezing water tmeperatures which rarely rise above 12C, battle strong water currents and aviod the local marine wildlife which includes GREAT WHITE SHARKS!!!They are raising money for GORTA the Irish charity, for their self help project in Uganda. GORTA are Ireland's longest running development organisation. Their stated aim is the empowerment of communities to eradicate hunger and poverty, with particular emphasis on food and water security and unrestricted access to secure and enviromentally sustainable livelihoods.Paul and Stephen are specifically raising money for the agricultural education scholarship program in Uganda. This project puts a particular emphasis on young girls in helping improve knowledge and skills in the use of modern technologies for increased and sustainable agricultural  productivity. The project also focuses on the participants gaining employment in the broader agricultural sector. Once an indvidual has participated in this program their entire household reaps the benifits as the person becomes a key income earner within the family unit and improves the household's food and income security. It is the first time either Paul or Stephen have attempted something like this. It poses a serious test of physcial endurance and resolve. Both will be funding their flights, accommidation and spending money with all money raised going directly to the designated charity.  So please dig deep!!!!
