Hey everyone! This summer I am lucky enough to be returning to the region of Assam in Northeast India to volunteer with UCD Volunteers Overseas as a student leader. A team of 16 of us will be travelling to India in June, where we will be met by students from Assam Don Bosco University who will make up the other half of our volunteering team.  UCDVO is a registered charity which is sending over 100 volunteers to partake in various development education projects in India, Tanzania and Uganda this coming summer. I was a member of the 2017 project in Assam, and couldn't be more excited to be going back! Over our four weeks there, we renovated 4 derelict Anganwadi centres, which serve as pre-schools and health care centres in local villages. We also delivered educational workshops on topics which were identified by the local communities. These topics included health and hygiene, first aid, women's empowerment, alcoholism and basic English classes for both adults and children. We produced and distributed booklets containing resources from these workshops to the teachers as well as including relevant contact information and comic strips illustrating social issues which were identified amongst these communities. We performed a street play in the local marketplace highlighting issues such as alcoholism, domestic violence and school drop-outs, all issues which are common in the Assam region. The money we fundraised also went towards a new well in one of the local communities and educational enhancement training for local pre-school teachers. Our work was continued on in 2018 and I am delighted to be a part of the 2019 team so that we can continue to make this project as successful as it has been in previous years. However, none of this would be possible without your help! This year I have a fundraising goal of €2,650.  Any donation made will be going towards the project, as I will be funding flights and accommodation costs myself.
