Hi everyone! My name is Sophie Gorman and I am a second year social science student in UCD. This summer I have been given the opportunity to travel to the region of Assam in North-East India with UCD Volunteers Overseas. UCDVO is a registered charity that carries out development projects all over the world in places such as India, Haiti, Tanzania, Uganda and Nicaragua. In June I will be travelling to Assam with a group of 17 other UCD students to carry out much needed projects in the local communities such as teaching primary and secondary level english classes to children, holding communicative english classes for the women in the area to help to improve their levels of practical english and holding information seminars and workshops on topics such as hygiene, alcoholism and domestic violence for the entire community. The region of Assam suffers from extremely high rates of violence against women, so workshops such as these are vital in educating and protecting both the women and men of the communities we will be working in. We will also be renovating and refurbishing preschool type facilities called Anganwadies, which serve as information centres for women regarding general health and contraception as well as centres for the care of young children. 6 members of our team will also be carrying out physiotherapy work in the Ferrando speech and hearing centre in Meghalaya. We will be working alongside a group of Indian volunteers from the University of Assam Don Bosco in Guwahti, who are studying for their social work masters. In order to make this project possible, each volunteer has a goal of €2600. I will be combining personal finances and carrying out various fundraising events over the next few months to make my way towards this goal. Any donations and support are greatly appreciated, as we as a group really want to make a difference to the lives of these people in Assam, even if its small.
