My name is Sophie Gallagher and I am a second year Politics, International Relations and Irish student in University College Dublin from Meath. This July I will be travelling with UCDVO to participate in a 4 week programme in Assam, India. During this project, myself and my peers will be working alongside students from the Department of Social Work in the local Assam Don Bosco University. Prior to our arrival ADBU students will be working to assess the needs of individual communities and speaking to locals directly. To begin our project, we will also be carrying out house visits to members of the area to understand what they want us to provide for them.To me, volunteering within this structure is the most effective as it is focused around social issues identified by the community itself. Through this they also analyse the best means in which to rectify or improve these social issues. Rather than Irish students travelling over with little information of what the project entails, constant communication between both Universities is at play ensuring impactful results. Building relationships is at the heart of this foundation.Day to day activities will involve building renovations of schools and/or local infrastructure. For the bigger jobs in which we are not skilled to partake in, local contractors will be called, aiding jobs. Workshops are another large part of this, as per each community’s needs their purpose may vary from English lessons to CV building to first aid and hygiene. However, in order to ensure this programme runs smoothly we must fundraise a sum of €1700 by May 26th. This cost will help cover expenses such as planning, supplies, evaluation and maintenance of previous projects. Furthermore reviews of the programme will be carried out to ensure it reaches its potential each year. If you wish to donate, you may do so via this page.
