Hi everyone! Ruthie here! This year I'm taking part in UCD Volunteers Overseas and Global Citizenship programme. The programme's aim is to enable UCD's student body to develop a deeper understanding of the challenges facing humanity worldwide and to build determination and self-belief to tackle underlying global poverty and inequality. This is achieved by enabling students to take part in a series of development education courses, workshops and events carried out throughout the year along with 4 weeks of volunteering overseas with partners in Uganda, Tanzania and India.  For the first time ever UCDVO's entire programme will be online on account of Covid-19.  I've been selected to volunteer with Nurture Africa Health Programme in Nansana Uganda. They have a special focus on women's empowerment and education. They do tremendous work in promoting gender equality and providing educational opportunities for women in third world countries. They provide resources, tools and financial support for girls affected by war and poverty to become physios and other healthcare professionals and to build a better life for themselves in the global south.  This year I will be engaging in workshops and taking part in a 4 weeks dedicated programme over the summer. Activities will include organising health & wellbeing awareness sessions, providing nutrition advice, exercise promotion, self-care & mental health initiatives, STEM training, collaborative group projects, physiotherapy sessions, pharmacology info & first aid sessions all with the goal of improving education and healthcare in the global south in line with international developmental framework. I'm looking forward to working with an organisation that prioritises women's empowerment and development. I'm excited to be working with Nurture Africa and being part of an initiative that that helps women reach their potential and achieve self-fulfilment. A requirement of programme participation is to raise a minimum of 750 euros which will go directly towards the work Nurture Africa do to facilitate the opportunities and support they provide.  I'm super excited to embark on this adventure and I'd greatly appreciate any donations big or small towards this fantastic cause.  Thanks so much in advance!  Ruthie :-)
