My Story

Hi! I was very fortunate to be selected as a volunteer for UCD Volunteers Overseas. This year I am participating in the UCDVO Volunteering & Development Education Programme, a component of which is a 4-week voluntary placement in Ruaha, Tanzania. Being a volunteer for UCDVO is a year-long commitment during which I will engage in training and awareness raising activities, language classes and cultural preparation, as well as team building. In Ruaha, I will engage in computer education programmes, classroom refurbishment, English teaching in summer camps for children, as well as the distribution of books and educational resources. Any amount, big or small, that you can donate will be greatly appreciated. The money you donate is going towards an excellent cause and will have a huge impact on the people of Ruaha! Please contact me if you have any questions! Here is some further information on UCDVO: UCDVO is a registered charity which provides UCD students, staff and alumni the opportunity to engage in a year-long volunteering and development education programme for the benefit of disadvantaged communities overseas, in response to needs explicitly identified by those communities.Throughout the next year, I will participate in a series of UCDVO Programme Days, including development education workshops, health & safety training and team-building activities before travelling overseas.UCDVO established a partnership with a Tanzanian NGO called TanzED. In 2009, UCDVO sent a group of volunteers to Morogoro for the first time. Since then volunteers have continued to work in Morogoro, Mikumi and Ruaha on computer education programmes, classroom refurbishments, summer camps for children, the distribution of books and educational resources, as well as the construction of a basketball court at Kihonda secondary school. UCDVO partners with Camara Education for the provision and set-up of computers laboratories in Tanzania, aswell as hosting computer collection dates in UCD, Belfield. Tanzania is one of the 9 priority countries with whom Irish Aid work with.Other examples of UCDVO projects include a community development and cultural exchange project in Northeast India, two physiotherapy projects in South India, assisting with the running of an education centre in Delhi, India, a computer education and environmental project in Haiti, an education and infrastructure project in Nicaragua, and two healthcare projects in Uganda.
