My Story
About Mustard Seed:Mustard Seed is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to caring for the most vulnerable members of society, especially disabled and abandoned children in Jamaica, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. Founded 40 years ago in 1978 in Kingston, Jamaica, Mustard Seed Communities began as a small home for a few abandoned children with disabilities and now cares for over 600 children and adults living with disabilities, children affected by HIV/AIDS, and young mothers in crisis throughout the 5 countries we serve. Mustard Seed aims to provide its residents with a safe and healthy environment where they can live and thrive through care and therapy. Mustard Seed strives to make a positive difference in the lives of these residents, as well as to uplift and empower the surrounding local communities through various community outreach programs. The majority of residential programs are dedicated to the care of children with serious physical and mental disabilities such as Down syndrome, hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy. Each resident receives an individual assessment, care, therapies and suitable treatment, and educational plans that are geared towards assisting them to live up to their full potential. The Dare to Care program, for children living with HIV/AIDs, provides residential care, education and anti-retroviral drugs (HIV/AIDS medication). We also provide a safe haven for abandoned teenage mothers, where they are provided with educational opportunities, nutrition, support, and essential life skills. Additionally, Mustard Seed manages sustainable agriculture initiatives and provides education, nutrition, and skills training programs to improve the economic and social conditions within marginalized communities.
