My Story

I will be heading to Kisiizi in Southwest Uganda this summer, with a team of other students as part of UCD Volunteers Overseas. Amongst us, there are nutrition and dietetic students, Medical students,  nursing students, and fellow physiotherpy students.I will spend 4 weeks providing support to the rehabilitation unit. Rehabilitation, in physiotherapy terms, entails optimising patient function and well-being, and helping to integrate them back into their chosen lifestyle activities. We will also be running a Cerebral Palsy rehabilitation camp with a paediatric population. In the past, UCDVO have completed: home visits and school workshops, children screening for malnourishment, construction of outdoor play area in the hospital, provided financial support for paediatric patients at the rehabilitation department, and funding wheelchairs/walking frames/mobility aids. This gives you an idea about the project I have signed up to.On a personal note, having just completed  6 week placement in CHI Crumlin, and having been exposed to the physiotherapy service provided to the paediatric population in Ireland, I saw a high standard, excellent equipment, resources, and treatment options available. According to the latest World Confederation for Physiotherapy, direct access to physiotherapy is available in 48 countries worldwide. A shockingly low number. Less than 1% have access to the service in Africa. I would like to give this physiotherapy service to the children out in Kisiizi.
