My Story

This summer I am delighted to have been chosen to travel to the Asha-Jyothi centre in South India as part of a team of 5 UCD Physiotherapy students and a chartered physiotherapist.Asha-Jyothi is a healthcare facility who work with disabled children from underprivileged backgrounds. The centre holds a strong belief that all children have a right to love and security, healthy food, decent shelter, good education, adequate medical care and to be protected from any form of abuse. UCDVO physiotherapy volunteers assist the centre in their primary objective  of empowering children with varied disabilities ranging from autism, cerebral palsy, hearing and speech impairments, polio and down syndrome, helping them in their path to rehabilitation and independence.  We will be working in the healthcare centre but also organising outreach and educational programmes in the local community in order to make sustainable change in the home around how disability is viewed. With your support we hope to provide physiotherapy services to these children, as well as run educational workshops for their carers/healthcare staff. The funds raised for the project are for the provision of physiotherapy equipment such as wheelchairs, splints and other gym/rehab equipment. UCDVO liases with the centre every year in order to provide resources tailored to the centres needs. The funds will also help to maintain and develop other healthcare resources which we hope will sustain the development of the centre once we leave.  I will be taking part in a year long education and training programme before travelling overseas and with your support I hope to raise as much awareness and funds as possible for the project. Any amount of support big or small is much appreciated!!
