Hi everyone, As some of you may know in Summer 2017 I travelled to Nansana Uganda with UCD Volunteers Overseas to work as a volunteer in a health centre. This Summer I'm lucky enough to be vounteering with UCDVO again, I'm delighted to be chosen as one of the student leaders to a group of volunteers studying physiotherapy, nursing, medicine and nutrition. We will be travelling with our clinical tutors to Kisiizi Hospital which is located in the Rukungiri district of South Western Uganda.During this time we will be assisting with a long standing, well-established community based rehabilitation programme in which children suffering from cerebral palsy, spina bifida and hydocephalus and their mothers will come and stay at the hospital and receive physiotherapy and health screening from volunteers.There will also be a malnutrition screening programme which will involve screening chidren for acute malnutrition and providing them wih a locally produced, nutrient rich nut paste to prevent hospitalisaton and reduce malnutrition.We will be providing members of the community with first aid, nutrition, mental health and disablity awareness wokshops, to name a few.We will be doing audits and education in the hospital on topics such as infection control, manual handling, pressure area prevention and interpretation of vital signs. The main aim of this project is sustainability. We will be proividing information and education that is sustainable and can be passed around the community. I will be funding all of my own expenses, all money donated will go directly to the project and help with the provision of supplies, physiothrapy equipment, resources, refurbisment of the hospital building as well as cover the cost of the childen and mothers attending the camp. Like last year I will be informing everyone of the impact their donations have made.
