Hey! My name is Kelly McNamara and I am a final year Pharmacology student inUCD. I have been given an amazing opportunity to volunteerin Ruaha, Tanzania this June with UCD Volunteer Overseas Charity. A team of 20 volunteers will be taking part in a month long project in partnership with the local community. The project I am involved in is focused on computer education programmes, classroom refurbishments, summer camps for children, the distribution of books and educational resources amongst local schools. As volunteers, we will be running computer classes on programmes such as office word, powerpoint and excel for teachers in local schools. We will also be teaching English to both children and teachers as well as running summer camps for the students. Our training for this project runs over the year and so we will be fully prepared from many training weekends to jump straight into the project once we arrive. We hope to leave the locals with new skills and knowledge, which they can share creating a sustainable impact on the community. In order for this to happen, each volunteer must fundraise €2,600. The money raised will be used to build computer labs and resources for the local schools. Three brand new computer labs will be installed with 25 computers in each lab. Through links with the Irish Embassy in Dar es Saalam, UCDVO established a partnership with aTanzanian NGO called TanzEd who will ensure maintenance of these labs once installed. Money raised will be used to produce computer labs with flooring, windows, electric fans and lighting and of course the computers. Money fundraised will also go towards resources for the school such as sports equipment, arts and crafts supplies and eductional books. Since the beginning of projects in Tanzania, UCDVO have installed over 600 computers, provided training for over 600 teachers in 31 different schools, carried out multiple school refurbishment projects and library developmentprojects. I am privileged to be taking part in such a great program and would love your support. Any donations of any size would be greatly appreciated. Thank you:) Kelly xox
