Hey Guys!This summer I will be travelling to Tamil Nadu in the south of India as a volunteer with UCDVO. I will be participating in 'Rás UCD' to raise money.  This is a 5k race that UCD holds and it will be on the 6th of April.  Any donation at all would be so greatly appericated, big or small. The mission is to empower women in rural India through self-help groups, micro financing, and providing child education support. I will be primarily working with impoverished mothers in the villages of Tamil Nadu who are classed as Scheduled Caste or, in other words Dalit/Untouchables. Untouchables are members of the lowest social group in the Hindu caste system. The word "Dalit," meaning "oppressed" or "broken," is the name members of this group gave themselves in the 1930s.  I will be travelling to Tamil Nadu to work in partnership with an Irish - Indian NGO, Nandri. Nandri organise Self-help groups that operate similarly to a credit union run by the women. It is an opportunity for these women to access small loans, while also benefiting from the solidarity and sociability of being in a group. While I am over there, I will also be working with the children of these mothers, running workshops with them such as homework clubs and teaching them English. This is a really great cause that I feel very strongly about, any donation that could go towards making this possible would mean so so much!
