Hi all, my names Ciara Breslin and i'm a third year Biomedical Engineering Student in University College Dublin. This year I have been very fortunate to have been selected to travel to Haiti for the month of June, with UCD Volunteers Overseas, teaching English & Computers and participating in community development. UCDVO is a charity which sends 140 students annually to developing countries such as Tanzania, India, Haiti, Nicaragua and Uganda, to partake in volunteer work such as construction, education, I.T development and much more. UCDVO has been running projects in Gros Morne in northwest Haiti since 2005. Between 2005 and 2015, over 200 volunteers have spent one month working within this same community. UCDVO works with two missionary sisters, Sr. Patricia Dillon and Sr. Jackie Picard from the Religious of Jesus and Mary (RJM), to implement community development projects which have included the construction of houses, schools, shelters, latrines, flood prevention walls; and summer camps for almost 5,000 children from the local area. However this year we are focusing more on education development, teaching computers to teachers and english to the local community. Also participating in community development in the local nursing home and near by agronomy centre. In order for me to go however I've to raise €2600. €1,400 of which will go towards my flights, accommodation, visas, insurance, local transport, and training and €1,200 of these funds are allocated to the costs of the project, i.e. educational resources etc.The development work that has been done in Gros Morne till now has been exceptional and in June we hope to help continue this amazing work with our project. I would greatly appreciate any donation big or small. Thank you, Ciara xo
