Hi everyone! As some of you may know, I have been lucky enough to be chosen to volunteer as a nutrition student with ‘UCD Volunteer Overseas’ in Uganda this July for four weeks. I will be travelling with a team of physiotherapy and dietetic students along with our clinical tutors to Kisiizi Hosipital which is located rurally in the Rukungiri district of South Western Uganda. During this time I will be assisting with a community based rehabilitation programme and a 'community based management of acute malnutrition' (CMAM) intervention. The 'CMAM' intervention will involve  screening infants and children for acute malnutrition and providing them with 'ready to eat therapeutic food' (a locally produced nut paste) to prevent hospitalisation. We will be providing members of the local community with practical nutrition and hydration workshops aswell during this time. I will also be working in a cerebral palsy camp in Kisiizi Hospital which is run by the UCD physiotherapy students providing nutrition education workshops and monitoring the nutritonal status of the children. The aim of the camp is to provide sustainable treatment for the participants and help educate their families on how best to manage their child's condition and maximise their quality of life. Each volunteer is asked to raise €2,600 to participate in the UCDVO projects. €1,200 goes directly to the hospital to help with the provision of physiotherapy equipment, prostheses, educational resources, refurbishment of the hospital building as well as to cover the cost of all the children and mothers attending cerebral palsy rehabilitation camp. The remaining €1,400 will be used to pay for the cost of flights, accommodation, food, etc. which I will be funding myself.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated and I can assure you that every cent will be put to good use!
