Cause

Age Action was established in 1992 as the voice for older people and Ireland’s leading advocacy organisation on ageing issues. We act both as a network of organisations and individuals, including older people and carers of older people, and a service provider, assisting tens of thousands of older people every year. Our mission is to empower all older people to live full lives as actively engaged citizens and to secure their rights to comprehensive high quality services according to their changing needs.

Response

Age Action is a campaigning organisation, working with older people to secure their human rights, improve policies and promote equality. We engage with the Government, policy-makers and the media to ensure the needs of older people are put on the agenda. We also carry out detailed policy research that is informed and shaped by the lived experience of our members and older people more generally. Our information team provides a free and confidential service to older people and their families. We provide information on benefits, services and entitlements for older people. Our Care & Repair service carries out minor repairs for older people free of charge along with a befriending and home visit service. In 2015 we carried out more than 28,000 jobs, visits and calls across Ireland. As part of our fight against digital exclusion, Age Action’s Getting Started programme delivers one-to-one training on computers, tablets and smartphones to people over the age of 55.

Projects

  1. The Care and Repair Programme was established by Age Action to carry out minor repairs for older and vulnerable people free of charge, to give them access to reliable tradesmen for larger jobs and to provide a befriending service. We plan to continue this service in 2017.

  2. As part of our fight against digital exclusion, Age Action's Getting Started Computer Training programme delivers one-to-one training on computers, tablets and smartphones to people over the age of 55 all over Ireland. More than 27,000 Irish people have benefited from Age Action's Getting Started Computer Training programme to date, with hundreds more to take-part in 2017.

  3. One of our cornerstone services which we will carry out in 2017 is our information service on older people's issues and services throughout Ireland. Trained information officers provide information or referrals to the appropriate organisations. This service deals with a wide range of issues including: entitlements, accommodation issues, health concerns, security and safety issues and more.

  4. The Generations Together programme which was launched in April 2011, focuses on establishing new intergenerational projects and supporting existing projects. The programme supports practice that creates opportunities for older and younger people to meet and learn from each other and to bridge the divide between generations. It promotes inclusion and builds on the positive resources that different generations have to offer to each other and those around them.
