This summer I will be travelling to Tamil Nadu in South India to work with the Nandri Centre whose mission is "to empower disadvantaged women in rural India". The Nandri Centre works closely with families who are known as Dalits, which means 'broken people' or 'untouchables' and live at the bottom of India's rigid social order known as the caste system. Nandri provides child support programmes, mothers self-help groups, training programmes, income generation loans and third-level education loans.I will be travelling to Tamil Nadu with UCD Volunteers Overseas who have worked with Nandri in the past. Although the project will last a month overseas, UCDVO has a year-long programme that involves educating all volunteers on development issues and works closely with Comhlámh to ensure responsible and responsive volunteering. I will be working as Team Coordinator for a group of roughly 15 people who will be volunteering and working with Nandri. All money donated through this page is deposited directly with UCDVO for the project outlined above, any and all help is appreciated.
