Hello! I'm Ellie and I am currently studying a MSc in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics. I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to participate in a pilot project with UCD Volunteer Overseas in July 2020. The Dar Es Salaam project will take place in the Matumaini Centre in Tanzania, a daycare centre for children with disabilities (cerebral palsy, microcephaly and other genetic, physical and mental disabilities) and their parents. It was established in 2010 by members of the Holy Union Sisters and currently has over 1,000 children registered. There, I will be providing training to staff members, assessing children's needs whilst also providing supports and advice to parents on how to manage their child's disability. This will include; malnutrition screening, physiotherapy and play therapy, as well as educational workshops for parent and children on various topics such as nutrition, first aid, sexual education. We also hope to educate and reduce the stigma surrounding disabilities in this community. I will be travelling as part of a team of physiotherapists, nutrition/dietetics and nursing students and we will work on developing this healthcare and education project for future years. In preparation for this exciting project, I have been asked to raise €2650 which supports the volunteer to carry out the above tasks for 1 month and also covers the costs of project resources such as physiotherapy equipment, educational resources and refurbishments.
