My Story

The Glencree Centre for Peace and Reconciliation was founded in 1974 as a response to violent conflict in Irish society, and in light of a conviction that there must be a better way than violence and vandalism, intolerance and sectarianism. A spirit of commitment to these ideals inspired the foundation of the Centre and continues to motivate its varied activities of peace training and peace making.Glencree’s mission is to help deepen reconciliation within and between communities on the island of Ireland and in selected contexts internationally. Glencree strives to achieve this by helping the transformation and building of relationships through facilitated inclusive dialogue and capacity building of stakeholders. We aim to transform violent conflict with sustainable peaceful methods by including and respecting all stakeholders, in line with our core values of Inclusion, Non-Violence, Respect, Independence and Impartiality.Since 1974, Glencree has engaged in practical peacebuilding and reconciliation in Ireland, north and south, and more recently, internationally. We work with former combatants, community leaders, victims/survivors, politicians, faith groups, young people and women. In these intervening 45 years, Glencree has been the scene of important events and projects. They have been wide-ranging in their scope, including in the fields of education, recreation, fund-raising, work camps and hosting a multitude of visitors from all corners of the world..
