Hi Everyone! My name is Doireann Mullany and I am a UCD student studying Veterinary Medicine. This summer, I have been given the privilege to volunteer with UCD Volunteer Overseas. I have the opportunity to work in Morogoro, Tanzania for four weeks over the summer. UCDVO was established in 2003, and their vision is for UCD students to graduate with an understanding of the challenges facing humanity worldwide and the determination and self belief to tackle the issues underlying poverty and inequality in the world. Through links with the Irish Embassy in Dar es Saalam, UCDVO established a partnership with a Tanzanian NGO called TanzED. In 2009, UCDVO sent a group of volunteers to Morogoro for the first time. Since then volunteers have continued to work in Morogoro, Mikumi and Ruaha on computer education programmes, classroom refurbishments, summer camps for children, the distribution of books and educational resources, as well as the construction of a basketball court at Kihonda secondary school. UCDVO partners with Camara Education for the provision and set-up of computers laboratories in Tanzania, aswell as hosting computer collection dates in UCD, Belfield. Tanzania is one of the 9 priority countries with whom Irish Aid work with.Myself and the other volunteers will be mainly teaching computer skill to teachers over there. These teachers will then pass these skills on to their pupils, making this project sustainable and long-lasting. The money we fundraise is used for the renovation of a classroom in each school for the purpose of teaching ICT, as well as the refurbishment of old computers which are shipped over to complete the classroom.I will be paying for my own expenses (flights, accomodation, vaccines etc) and therefore all the money that is fundraised will go directly to Tanzania.Every little donation goes a long way and I would greatly appreciate your support.Go raibh míle!
